Robert Parker's (by Mark Squires) Portuguese Wine reviews Christmas issue - 28th December 2012.
Another Christmas present for Quinta Vale D. Maria and CV
Yet another year (the third consecutive year and 4 times in the last five years) our 2010 Douro Reds have toped Mark Squires' (Robert Parker's Wine Advocate) Portuguese wine tastings for the new vintage on the market.
CV - Curriculum Vitae 2010 Douro Red was top of the list with 94 points (only another wine also with 94 points) and Quinta Vale D. Maria came a fantastic second place this year with 93 points (only another wine with 93 points also).
This is really great news and I am particularly happy with the consistency, year after year and vintage after vintage, of our wines.
Thank you all, my dear friends, for being my partners in this great adventure.
I take the chance to wish you all a Very Happy 2013 with lots of success (and lots of sales of our wines, of course).
With my very best wishes to each one and to all,

European Enterprise Promotion Award:
The Douro Boys have made it to the championship round!
The Douro Boys, a group of five standout wine producers from Portugal’s Douro Valley, just went for a change of pace — not that they took time off from racking up more top wine-ratings and accolades, but rather, they were chosen as Portugal’s finest entrepreneurial enterprise!
91 businesses and entrepreneurial projects competed in a total of five categories in Portugal to proceed to the final round of judging for the European Enterprise Promotion Award. Only two made it to the ultimate round, and one of these was in fact the Douro Boys, who were praised as the ideal realisation of cooperative efforts between small and medium-sized business, and this by virtue of their dynamic and distinctive marketing strategies.
For their initiative to make the picturesque landscape of the Douro Valley known worldwide as the finest among wine-regions, and to promote on a grand scale not only their own products, but rather the entire district (and not least enhancing the appreciation of Portugal as a whole in the process), the Douro Boys were honoured in the category ‘International Impact.’ Their accomplishments will be weighed in the balance against projects from 27 member nations in the final round. Presentation of the European prize will take place in November on Cyprus.
The five family wine estates Quinta do Vallado, Quinta do Crasto, Niepoort, Quinta Vale D. Maria and Quinta Vale Meao are working together since 2002, and have implemented a dynamic, often lighthearted and mischievous strategy for the publicising of their wines and above all their region — the scenically gorgeous and breathtaking Douro Valley.
Thanks to ‘happenings’ like the iconic ‘Pool Party’ in the back-yard of some staid Bordeaux châteaux — with educational workshops in Chicago, Washington DC and New York — via Luanda, Macau, Shanghai, Beijing, Tokyo, Rio de Janiero and Sao Paolo — all the way to London, Copenhagen and Hamburg, with the legendary auction of a ‘Douro Boys Cuvée’ and with unbelievable hospitality — including merry and rustic festivities at their Quintas — the Douro Boys have continued to attract the attention of the media and the wine-trade, not to mention that of sommeliers and wine-connoisseurs from all over the world. Over the course of ten years, the total export volume of the five family wineries has grown from 4.7 million Euros to 11 million Euros. All told, the Douro Boys sold some 17 million Euros worth of high-quality wine in the year 2011.
The Douro Boys represent the five families Roquette (Quinta do Crasto), Olazabal (Quinta Vale Meao), van Zeller (Quinta Vale D. Maria), Ferreira (Quinta do Vallado) and Niepoort (Niepoort), who have been committed in promoting the image and reputation of Portuguese wines. They decline the desire to achieve this goal with the use of modern, imported grape varietals and clichés, but rather focus their philosophy on the highest level of quality and authenticity, as well as friendly hospitality.
