Planted on the banks of the Rio Torto, which flows at the foot of Quinta Vale D. Maria, there is a vineyard of less than one hectare, with 29 different grape varieties, predominantly Tinta Barroca (50%), arranged in a typical field blend of the Douro’s old vineyards. This is the oldest vineyard on the estate, with an average age of 80 years. This is the Vinha do Rio, facing south, bathed in midday sunlight and sheltered from the afternoon sun by the mountain rising behind it, providing several hours of shade. Of all the vineyards at Quinta Vale D. Maria, this is the one located at the lowest altitude. Since 1996, the grapes from this vineyard have filled the winery with vibrant and penetrating aromas. The decision to vinify the Vinha do Rio grapes separately, with its own label, was made in 2009. Since then, the Quinta Vale D. Maria Vinha do Rio has been produced.
