Quinta Vale D. Maria Vinhas Velhas, the soul of the Douro in a wine
Old vines are one of the Douro’s greatest treasures. They hold decades of history, rare diversity and a sense of identity that cannot be replicated.
At Quinta Vale D. Maria, located in the heart of the Cima Corgo, these vines are the centre of a living legacy: a collection of varieties planted across different plots over generations, where 41 grape varieties coexist, with deep roots and a natural balance that cannot be artificially recreated.
It is here that Quinta Vale D. Maria Vinhas Velhas is born — an emblematic wine that expresses the authenticity and depth of the Douro like few others.
What makes old vines so unique and so rare in the Douro
Old vines are not simply old vineyards. In the Douro, they are the result of a particular and ancestral way of planting, caring for and vinifying vines: plots where different grape varieties grow side by side, in a field blend, shaped by the territory over decades.
At Quinta Vale D. Maria, each plot was planted with intention and wisdom, respecting steep slopes, sun exposure and the natural diversity of the land. This empirical knowledge enabled the creation of resilient vineyards capable of withstanding time, the elements, and successive generations, while preserving their unique identity.
Field blend
Field blend — where different grape varieties are mixed within the vineyard and harvested and vinified together, without separation — is an essential condition for a vineyard to be considered truly old in the Douro.
It is not merely a technique, but a natural response to a demanding territory, where diversity ensures balance. Some varieties ripen earlier, others later; some cope better with heat, others preserve freshness, ensuring consistency and complexity year after year.
It is in this context that Quinta Vale D. Maria Vinhas Velhas, the estate’s most iconic wine, comes to life. It is the only wine that brings together all 41 grape varieties over 60 years old identified in the estate’s vineyards, making it the most complete expression of its essence and viticultural heritage.
Nature plays a decisive role here. The different sun exposures (from east to west, south, south-east and south-west) provide balanced light and protection from cold northern winds.
The schist soils, porous and poor, force the roots to grow deep in search of water and nutrients, reinforcing the wine’s identity. Variations in altitude contribute simultaneously to freshness and to longer, more balanced ripening.
Across the 15 hectares of old vines, varieties such as Rufete, Tinta Amarela, Tinta Francisca, Sousão, Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz can be found, a palette of grapes that authentically expresses the identity of the Douro.
Care in the vineyard: precision, patience and continuity
Caring for old vines is an act of patience and dedication. Each vine requires individual attention, and every gesture is meticulous:
– controlled pruning
– selection of grafts from the vineyard itself
– gradual replacement of vines that have died
– encouragement of natural biodiversity
This commitment also looks to the future. Recently, Quinta Vale D. Maria planted 2 hectares with ancient and nearly forgotten grape varieties, all native to the Douro, ensuring the preservation of the region’s genetic memory.
From vineyard to cellar
The authenticity of the vineyard demands respect in the cellar. Here, tradition and technique go hand in hand:
– hand harvesting
– careful selection of grape bunches
– foot treading in granite lagares
– closely monitored fermentations
– ageing in different types of French oak barrels
This meticulous process allows each lot to preserve the purity of the fruit and the identity of the vineyard, resulting in wines of balance and great depth.
Wines that tell the story of the estate
The Quinta Vale D. Maria Vineyard Collection is the ultimate expression of the diversity of its terroir. Each wine is a chapter of the same story, revealing different perspectives of the same origin.
Quinta Vale D. Maria Vinhas Velhas
Quinta Vale D. Maria Vinhas Velhas is born from a field blend of 41 grape varieties from vines over 60 years old. This combination, shaped by natural selection and the ancestral layout of the vineyards, gives rise to a singular wine marked by depth and authenticity.
The privileged sun exposure (from east to west) ensures balanced ripening, while the northern winds are blocked by natural barriers that protect the vineyard.
Within the 15 hectares of old vines are varieties such as Rufete, Tinta Amarela, Tinta Francisca, Sousão, Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz, revealing the quintessential identity of the Douro.
Quinta Vale D. Maria Vinha do Rio
Quinta Vale D. Maria Vinha do Rio is located on the banks of the Rio Torto, at the foot of Quinta Vale D. Maria. Covering less than one hectare, it is the estate’s oldest vineyard, with an average age of 80 years, planted as a field blend of 29 grape varieties, with Tinta Barroca accounting for around 50%.
South-facing and sheltered from the afternoon sun by the mountain, it benefits from several hours of shade, allowing for slow, aromatic ripening.
It gives rise to a wine with a distinctive identity: concentrated, deep and full of character.
Vale D. Maria Vinha de Martim
Vale D. Maria Vinha de Martim was born from the search for the finest Douro terroir for white wines. It is a high-altitude, north-facing vineyard, over 80 years old, something extremely rare in the world of Douro whites.
Its blend of traditional grape varieties is the result of decades of viticulture, producing a white wine of great precision, freshness and elegance — a profile internationally recognised and ranked among the 50 best white wines in the world.
Quinta Vale D. Maria Vinha da Francisca
Quinta Vale D. Maria Vinha da Francisca comes from a distinct and younger vineyard, covering 4.5 hectares with south and south-east exposure, planted in 2004 by Cristiano van Zeller in homage to his daughter Francisca, then 18 years old.
Unlike the estate’s older vineyards, this plot brings together just five grape varieties (Tinta Francisca, Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Rufete and Sousão), chosen to reflect an elegant, contemporary and distinctive Douro profile.
The result is a vibrant, refined and harmonious wine, where fruit and freshness combine in a very personal expression of the region.
The essence of the Douro in a bottle
At Quinta Vale D. Maria, wines are not merely products. They are living organisms that evolve and gain depth over time. Each bottle is a testament to a commitment to the land and to the preservation of old vines.
The result is wines that speak the language of schist, of slopes, of climate and of memory. Wines that carry the soul of the Douro.
A heritage that endures
The story of Quinta Vale D. Maria proves that great wines are born of time, respect and continuity. Each vineyard, from the oldest to the youngest, contributes to a living heritage that preserves the character of the Douro and returns it in the form of wines of rare authenticity.
Within this collection are wines that not only represent the region, but elevate it — preserving what is most precious and projecting it into the future.
